Two visions of AI clashed on the chessboard. Sam Altman, head of Openi and Elon Musk, founder XAI, has exceeded his models in a chess tournament organized by Google. O3 Openai and Grok 4 from XAI have been measured without any specialized assistance for three days. Much more than a simple exhibition match, the event turned to revealing: for the final score, it is a real gap between two artificial intelligence and two strategies that have appeared in an open state.

In short
- Sam Altman and Elon Musk clashed the IA inserted in a chess tournament organized by Google.
- The XAI O3 O3 OPENAI and GROK 4 models played without chess or specialized training.
- Openiai largely dominated the match and won the final at a score of 4–0.
- The tournament revealed the current limits of the general AIS in the face of strict rules.
One -way finish
However, during the final disputed on August 7, the O3 Openai, a few days ago, it was written to the GPT-5, which has already disappointed, caused 4-0 without appeal to Xai Grok 4.
This tournament, baptized “KAGGLE GAME ARENA AI Chess Exhibition”It has banned any use of a chess engine or reserved training, so the models were administered with their general knowledge gained on the Internet.
From the first parts the difference was felt. Magnus Carlsen, World Champion and Commentator of the event, compared two AI “A gifted child who doesn’t know how parts move”They believe that their level around 800 ELO, far from competing standards.
Grok Classness has multiplied throughout the finals:
- Loss of important parts free of charge, which offers an immediate material advantage in Openai;
- Failure and “Infantry poisoning”with a bad goal that led to immediate captivity of his lady;
- In the middle of the game, solid positions spoiled, with a sequence of incoherent strokes;
- Maltus management Initial advantages in the fourth part, which allows O3 to reverse the situation.
Hikaru Nakamura, Grand Master International and Streamer event, summarized the difference between two opponents: “Openi did not make the mistakes Grok made”. He also appreciated the magnificent output of O3 in the last part, where the bad start yet for Xai d’Alon Musk introduced a possible victory.
Limits exposed to general AIS
In addition to the score, the tournament revealed the structural problems of the general AIS as they face a strict framework such as failure. Many models have been disqualified in the preliminary phase after trying impossible events: teleportation of parts, resurrection of captured units, illegal pawns trips.
Even in the finals, the understanding of the rules seemed to be fragile and alternates between brilliant blows and absurd decisions. As CARLSEN stressed “These AI know how to calculate the captured parts but not how to close the winning part”.
This observation is not isolated. At the beginning of this year, the International Master Levy, a similar tournament, was organized, where the language models multiplied illegalities until the summons disappeared. Stockfish, specialized AI, won a high event. These episodes show that despite the promises and manifestations of their versatility, language models remain by being able to master tasks requiring cohesion and procedural strictness.
For Elon Musk, this defeat against Sam Altman, the second in a direct competition this year, is decreasing at the wrong time when XAI has just won $ 10 billion and is trying to stand up as a trusted actor in the general race AI. For the entire sector, however, the Google exhibition recalls primarily that the main current models stand out in the treatment of natural language, much less in the strict application of complex rules. AI can one day be able to compete with the best chess players … But that day it also showed that it is able to think far from black and white boxes.
