When the engineer and graduate of MIT Calvin French -owen joined in May 2024, he had around 1,000 employees. A year later, the workforce of Openi tripled to 3,000 employees and the French -wen was in the top 30% of functions.

In a blog post published on Tuesday, French -wen describes in detail what it was like to work for the Chatgpt’s manufacturer for over a year, from May 2024 to June 2025. He left Openai, and said there was no “personal drama” to simply “criticize the new beginning”.

While he worked on Openai, French -wen on Codex, an assistant coding released in May, which sums up with AI coding tools such as cursor and Anthropic’s Claude Code. In his blog paper he described that this team of eight engineers, furnace scientists, two designers, two managers on the market and one project manager created Codex in just seven weeks. Most of the nights in the world until 23:00 or midnight have entered the office on weekends to complete the project.

“It is difficult to overestimate how incredible this level of pace was,” wrote French -wen. “I haven’t seen a big or small organization to go from the idea of a fully running + freely available product in such a short window.”

He later added that Codex reached 630,000 engineers in less than two months after the start.

“I’m not a day before we are so influencing something in my life,” France -wen wrote.

One “unusual” aspect of Openai, who emphasized French -wen in his blog post, was that “there is no e-mail” and almost all communication is happening on the platform of sending messages at the Slack workplace. He estimated that he received about 10 e -mails in his demanding time.

French -wen also said that there was strong bias in Openai, which means that employees are encouraged to have good ideas and act on them. He characterized Startup as an extremely meritocratic and promoted the employed to have the best ideas instead of their ability to present at meetings or play political games.

French -wen found that OpenIi was a “very secret place” and “a more serious place than you could expect”. Startup forbade him to tell someone what was working on detail, and it was as if the bets were high for the company to create a product used by 500 million global weekly users.

French -owen also wrote that this is engineering, there is a “very signature” meta of Openai pipes. In his early days he leaned that a similar meta, with the highest consumer application and “desire to move really quickly,” is open.

Before joining Open, French-up was formerly a co-founder of the data launch segment that Twilio Bough for $ 3.2 billion in 2020.

Meta also hires the talent from Openi.
